With 540 million people suffering from it worldwide, back pain is a global public health burden. Traditionally, treatments such as steroids and other pain medication were standard when it came to treating back pain.
However, recently, The Lancet, an extremely reputable medical journal, published three studies highlighting what works when it comes to treatment for back pain, and what doesn’t. The study concluded that the first line of treatment should be staying active, staying at work, and educating yourself about back pain. But it’s the second line of treatment that is so path-breaking.
The study, which was reported on the popular American morning TV show, Good Morning America, emphasized that contrary to popular opinion, painkillers should only be used to treat back pain when other treatments have failed. These treatments include superficial heat, spinal manipulation, massage, acupuncture and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) as opposed to steroids and other painkillers.
Chiropractors have been treating back pain on a regular basis for years and years, and this study validates what they have always known…that spinal manipulation should be one of the main lines of treatment when it comes to back pain. Chiropractors also prescribe the application of superficial heat and massage for back pain.
